My first encounter with the music of Danny Grissett came with the first time that I heard Journey To The Stars, from trumpeter Tom Harrell’s recording Number Five (2012). I was so thoroughly impressed by his expertise on the black & whites that I became his number-one fan. OK – not officially, but you’d be hard-pressed to find another who loves Mr. Grissett’s style as much as I do.
Danny Grissett was born in Los Angeles, CA in 1975 and continued for some time to reside in California, garnering a musical education. After playing in and around Los Angeles until 2003, he moved to NYC. He became the keyboardist for the Grammy Award winner Nicholas Payton in 2004, and has, since 2005, been a regular keyboardist for Tom Harrell. Grissett released his first album, Promise (2006), my personal favorite, and his second, Encounters (2008), both with Vincente Archer (bass) and Kendrick Scott (drums). I could go on and on, but let’s skip to the music and get you better acquainted with a maestro in his own right. I’m certain that you become an instant fan, so give a listen.
As always, jazz, jazz, and nothing but jazz. Most of the time.
