Essentials: Gentle Warrior, by Tim Warfield

Tim Warfield was born in York, PA, in 1965. At an early age, he started playing saxophone, first with the alto sax, then on to the tenor sax. He has worked with a number of prominent musicians throughout his career, including Jimmy Smith, Christian McBride, Dizzy Gillespie, Donald Byrd, Isaac Hayes, Orrin Evans, and the list goes on. That list barely scratches the surface of the many musicians with whom he has appeared/worked. Not surprisingly, his accolades stretch nearly as long. He is a standing member of The Terell Stafford Quintet. And this is found on his website – he “earned the position of Assistant Professor & Coordinator of the Jazz Masters of Music Graduate Program at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa.”. That’s a long and impressive title for a long and impressive career. Thanks, Tim! So, my friends, I give you Gentle Warrior (1998), which includes my absolute favorite Warfield song, Lani. It’s definitely an essential recording for your collection. Enjoy.

Jazz, jazz, and nothing but jazz. Except when it’s not.
