The Esbjorn Svensson Trio, (e.s.t.) formed in 1993 with Esbjorn Svensson (piano), Dan Berglund (double bass), and Magnus Ostrom (drums). The Swedish trio, from the start, baffled many of us with their varied style of play, making it difficult to determine just where their loyalties lie. I think that the clear winner was jazz. Seven Days Of Falling (2003) certainly deserves a spot in your collection, though I often turn to the title track of From Gagarin’s Point Of View (1999), and Where We Used To Live from Tuesday Wonderland (2006) as my “go to” music picks, as goes Swedish jazz.

Svensson earned the title of Swedish Jazz Musician in both 1995 and 1996, and Songwriter of the Year in 1998. The group’s recording Strange Place For Snow (2002) picked up more than a few awards including The German Jazz Award, and The French Grammy, and in 2004, e.s.t. was awarded the Hans Koller prize for European Artist of the Year. Sadly, Svensson died as a result of a scuba diving accident on June 14, 2008. Since 2013, Berglund and Ostrom have been touring with the project e.s.t. symphony. Here’s Seven Days of Falling.

Jazz, jazz, and nothing but jazz. Mostly.
