Jasmin Ghent not only plays the saxophone supremely, but she sings, as well. That is a fact which is demonstrated superbly on the recording entitled The Story of Jaz (2018). Although she has some slow, mellow tunes, a lot of her work will have your heart racing. One such upbeat song, Heat, was included in last week’s playlist.
She blends saxophone with voice in a unique manner, and it’s a trait that is quickly becoming one of her trademarks. Her other recordings include her debut offering, Boss (2015), and her sophomore recording, Chocolate Sunshine (2016). In 2017, she was selected by the NAACP Image Awards as Jazz Artist of the Year. The Story of Jaz was named the 2019 NAACP Image Award winner for Outstanding Jazz Album.
I’d pick a personal favorite, but that would be an impossible task – they are all fantastic. Samples are linked below. Enjoy.
