A smoke-filled room; laughter, conversation; and most importantly, music. That’s the feel that I get when listening to Branford Marsalis wailing on the sax. He is the son of Ellis Marsalis Jr., jazz pianist (November 14, 1934 – April 1, 2020) , and has five (5) brothers . Aside from Branford and Wynton (trumpet), there are two other brothers who became jazz musicians, Delfeayo (trombone) and Jason (drums). Although Branford started out playing soprano, alto, and tenor saxophones, he later abandoned the alto for the tenor and soprano.
Have a listen to what is often noted as one of Branford Marsalis’ best recordings, Trio Jeepy (1989). Joining him was Milton Hinton on bass (replaced by Delbert Felix on three tracks), and Jeff Watts on drums. This recording, more than any, reminds me of that smoke-filled jazz club. I can almost hear the laughter and conversation as Branford wails. Enjoy.

I love the music of the Marsalis brothers! Branford’s music was/is my favorite. I remember seeing their younger brother Jason on drums with blind jazz panist Marcus Roberts in the early 2000’s. What a gifted and talented family, they are truly a national treasure! Thanks for sharing!!!
